High Point Market: Fall 2014 Part III

Trims, tapes, embroidery shapes, painted motifs, and the basics of shapes….all next up on our fall market overview. Sometimes it is the subtle details of a faint pattern or the bold declaration of a shape that help define the overall aesthetic of a space…

…For instance, the classic Greek Key and fretwork inspired motifs have long been a classic and have been a design trend showcased more and more in the last few years (see here) but as of late we are noticing this constant favorite still steadily present in fresh new ways such as exaggerated scales, painted finishes (rather than carved), embroidery (rather than trims), and in both subtle and overscale case good detailing.

While the Moroccan ogee design along with variations of the interlocking trellis motif have also been ever present as of late and remain still a classic in some regards the newest shape on the block is by far the quatrefoil. This decorative framework and variations of the silhouette in scroll and scalloped formations feel fresh, new, and innovative in a sea of different presentations of keys and ogees.

Finally, trim and fabric details done in decidedly different and innovative ways (oftentimes featuring these Greek key and quatrefoil patterns). More and more we are seeing accent banding on upholstery, grand bands on ottoman skirts, textural and layered flanges, the innovative use of leather and nail heads in banding, flange, and cording, flat tape trims that decide their own pattern to make, layered colors and trims that create their own unique look, and the unexpected use of materials such as sisal for gimp.
